Who would say not to Benfica? - Mourinho arrives for talks
Jose Mourinho announces he is close to being named Benfica manager after landing in Lisbon for discussions with the Portuguese club.
The 62-year-old is set to replace Bruno Lage, who was sacked following Tuesday's Champions League loss at home against Qarabag.
The 62-year-old has only been without a club for under a month after being dismissed by the Turkish outfit.
"Benfica officially asked me if I was interested. Which manager says no to such an opportunity? Not me," he told reporters after landing in Lisbon. "When I was presented with the opportunity to coach them, I jumped at the chance to say that I'm eager, that I'd want to."
He began his coaching career with the club in the year 2000 but managed only 10 games and left after a disagreement with the club president.
Mourinho then made his name with Porto between 2002-2004, claiming six trophies - including the Champions League in the 2003-2004 season.
After leaving his homeland in 2004, he has managed Chelsea, Inter Milan, Los Blancos, Manchester United, Spurs, Roma and Fenerbahce.
He left the Istanbul side on August 29, two days after they were knocked out from the Champions League qualifiers by Benfica.
If they appoint Mourinho, he would face the London club in the European competition at Stamford Bridge on 30 September.
Benfica also travel to Newcastle and host Real Madrid later in the league phase of the tournament.
