The buzz surrounding The Game Awards was significant, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious image of a desert monolith. The mystery has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is developing a fresh Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer packed with intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very unleashing of hell.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian warned that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.
Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This choice of words implies that the team could be designing a real-time experience as opposed to another tactical title. Currently, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it pioneered the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, branching plots, and complex character building—elements that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is brimming with unique possibilities only possible with a specific type of character with a personal story.
The series is also famously open-ended, allowing players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Most missions can be solved in a variety of manners, sometimes in unexpected fashion.
- You might find an answer because you heeded something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.
More to Come
It is this design philosophy that allow people to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games in history. Now, players can anticipate another adventure in this groundbreaking franchise.
