Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a major medical journal points out that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals purchasing these drugs need to be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the therapy concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to starting weight in about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually experience a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Experts suggest the mechanism of the injections accounts for the heightened rebound.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Disease?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
Individuals who have stopped the medication explain a powerful return of appetite.
"It was like something activating and you're instantly ravenous," said one woman.
The struggle is compounded if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Use
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts emphasize that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural support.
