Alleged Bondi Beach Gunmen Acted Independently and Did Not Undergo Preparation in the Philippines, Investigators Say.

The two alleged gunmen responsible for the fatal shooting at a Jewish event on Bondi Beach, that took 15 lives, reportedly operated independently, as stated by national police.

Authorities also confirmed that the 50-year-old Sajid Akram, and his 24-year-old son Naveed Akram travelled to the Philippines on 1 November. Their itinerary included landing in the main city Manila before traveling onward on the day of arrival to Davao City. The pair flew back to Sydney on 29 November.

Lack of Proof of Preparation During Stay

Authorities indicate the duo did not partake in any form of attack-related training or "logistical preparation" during their time in the Philippines. Early inquiries from local officials indicate they "hardly ventured out of" their hotel.

The incident—labeled as Australia's most severe mass shooting since 1996—has been formally classified as a terrorist incident.

"We are actively reviewing the footage," she said, adding that early assessments indicate that "the alleged offenders are alleged to have been lone actors."

Australian Federal Police Commissioner Krissy Barrett briefed media on Tuesday that security camera video tracking the accused attackers' activities in the Philippines had been provided to domestic authorities.

"Our investigation shows little to no indication to support the idea these accused individuals were members of a wider network, or were acting on orders from external parties to execute an act of violence," Commissioner Barrett emphasized.

But, the pair were also not in the Philippines as tourists, she noted. She emphasized that, given that the inquiry is continuing, new evidence may emerge.

Inspiration and Legal Charges

In prior statements, the nation's leader Anthony Albanese commented it appears both accused gunmen were "inspired by the so-called Islamic State" extremist views.

During the shooting, Sajid Akram was fatally shot by police. He and his son Naveed—equipped with firearms—allegedly shot guests at the Hanukkah event.

Naveed Akram, who was wounded after the shooting, has been formally accused of 59 charges. These include 15 charges of murder and one count of perpetrating a act of terrorism. He is scheduled to face court in April.

Immigration Information

In the days following the shooting, border officials in the Philippines indicated that the older suspect had arrived in the country using an foreign passport, while his son used an domestic passport.

The two had declared the southern city of Davao as their intended endpoint. Their booked return flight to Australia was for Sydney.

Davao is a sprawling urban center on the east of Mindanao, the Philippines' main island in the south. It is noted that, Islamist militants have reportedly be active in poorer parts of southern and western Mindanao.
